There are many wonderful learning activities to have fun with and explore. These are simple activities covering the basics which you can add into everyday life without much equipment or time to set up . . if any.
Most of these activities are about enhancing everyday situations into a learning experience to better prepare your child for school. When a child starts school it is beneficial to them if they know the letters of the alphabet and sounds, can count to ten and associate a number to the right amount of objects, can form some or all letters, and write their name.
You are helping teach them, so many of these activities can be repeated over and over together until they are answering questions on their own.
Extend or simplify these activities to suit your child’s comfort levels. Learning shouldn’t be forced, if it is upsetting or stressful stop it or change it. Continuing can create negative feelings about learning and low self esteem.
Real life experiences are the best opportunities for learning. If a child has discovered something they are interested in and excited about then the learning around that will stick with them. If they found a bug outside and are naturally interested then find out together what kind of bug it is, how many legs it has, what it likes to eat, what colours they come in, write down the name, find where they like to live, explore for more bugs. This is the kind of learning that comes easily to children and creates a love for learning.
Creating a home where your child feels loved, respected, secure and confident to try, to learn, and to ask questions, will promote positive learning experiences which lays the foundation for a positive start to school and a lifelong learner.
